Superbug Boosts Hopes of Rational Drug Use in India

NEW DELHI, Aug 22 (IPS) - Howls of protest from doctors and officials in India have followed the naming of the New Delhi Metallo-1 (NDM-1), a gene that can transform infectious bacteria into superbugs that are resistant to the most powerful antibiotics. But other experts hope that the furore on this issue may lead to a rethink on the widespread practice of using medicines indiscriminately.

Breastfeeding Dilemma for HIV-positive Mothers

KAMPALA, Aug 22 (IPS) - The new World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendation that HIV-positive mothers on antiretroviral therapy (ARVs) can exclusively breastfeed their babies for up to twelve months without infecting them has created confusion among HIV-positive mothers in Uganda as information about the new guidelines struggles to reach them. For the last decade the policy in Uganda had been to advise HIV-positive mothers to exclusively breastfeed for three months.

There is life after the Khmer Rouge Tribunal

The conviction, on July 26, of Kang Guek Eav-"Duch"-- former prison chief of the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, drew international media attention to Cambodia, at least for one news cycle. The verdict of the UN- sponsored tribunal, was important in that, for the first time, a key Khmer Rouge official was held accountable for the unspeakable crimes of the regime. The press highlighted the outcry that the sentence, 19 years in jail, was too lenient.
