New Hardships Intensify Debate Over Iran-Iraq War
Analysis by Farideh Farhi
HONOLULU, Hawaii, U.S., Aug 3 (IPS) - Ongoing factional disputes and mounting international sanctions have ignited heated debates among Iran's elites about another critical period in the country's post- revolutionary history - the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War. That war, in which at least a quarter million Iranians are believed to have died, hastened the rise of institutions, such as the Basij militia and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which remain key actors in Iran today.

NEW YORK, Aug 3 (IPS) - In a case viewed by many as a test of religious tolerance in the post-9/11 era, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) voted unanimously Tuesday morning against designating the future location of a Muslim-led community centre as a historic landmark. The vote means that demolition plans to make way for the controversial 13-story, 100-million-dollar centre two blocks from the former Twin Towers in lower Manhattan can proceed.

Hamas Slowly Islamising Gaza
Mel Frykberg
RAMALLAH, Aug 3 (IPS) - Gazans are caught between a rock and a hard place. While Israel continues to apply a crippling siege on the coastal territory, Gaza's Hamas government is cracking down on civil and political liberties in what appears to be a campaign to slowly Islamise Gaza. Last week detectives from Gaza's de facto Hamas government raided several stores and seized clothing which they alleged bore "immoral words". Cotton shirts produced in Gaza city with the slogan 'Porn Man Clothing' emblazoned on were confiscated.

Obama Drops 2009 Pledge to Withdraw Combat Troops from Iraq
Gareth Porter
WASHINGTON, Aug 3 (IPS) - Seventeen months after President Barack Obama pledged to withdraw all combat brigades from Iraq by Sep. 1, 2010, he quietly abandoned that pledge Monday, admitting implicitly that such combat brigades would remain until the end of 2011. Obama declared in a speech to disabled U.S. veterans in Atlanta that "America's combat mission in Iraq" would end by the end of August, to be replaced by a mission of "supporting and training Iraqi security forces".

JERUSALEM, Aug 2 (IPS) - Jerusalem is a city blessed but also cursed by its own holiness. No more so than here at 'Ground Zero', the religious epicentre within the walled Old City, beneath the most disputed holy site -- the Haram al-Sharif or Noble Sanctuary as known to Muslims, Har Habayit or the Temple Mount for Jews.

CAPE TOWN, Aug 2 (IPS) - Thailand and other major rice exporting countries are at risk of losing Africa as an important trading partner if they raise their rice prices. Half of the 10 million tons of rice exported by Thailand last year went to Africa. Nigeria, Benin, Cote d'Ivoire and South Africa were among the main buyers of rice in Africa.
