Israel Attacks Schools, Ambulances

RAMALLAH, Jan 6 (IPS) - At least 42 Palestinians sheltering in a UN school in the Jabaliya refugee camp near Gaza city were killed Tuesday afternoon after two Israeli tank shells exploded outside the school. Hundreds of terrified Palestinians, desperately trying to escape the bombing, had sought shelter there assuming that a clearly marked school would not be targeted. Palestinian sources reported that the school was one of 26 residential buildings hit Tuesday.

Obama's reticence, say Egyptian commentators, indicates that he will be no more even-handed on the issue of Palestine than preceding U.S. administrations.

Gas Dispute Raises Political Heat

MOSCOW, Jan 6 (IPS) - Disputes over gas supply from Russia to Europe have again taken on a political dimension. After Ukraine failed last week to negotiate a new price for Russian gas and to pay more than 600 million dollars demanded by Russia, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin ordered the country's gas giant Gazprom to reduce supplies. Gazprom pulled the plug Jan. 1, while maintaining supplies to European Union consumers.
